Swim Meets
Code of Conduct

Please read the Sudbury Swim Team Code of Conduct.

Your opinion is important to us, let us know how we are doing.

Swim-A-Thon

This year the swimathon and ice cream social date is Friday, February 5 (6-8pm)

Team Banquet

The banquet date is Thursday, March 25 -- (6:30 - 8:30 pm) -- not the 18th (we had to postpone it one week due to Curtis play)

The team aspires to create an environment where swimmers enjoy the experience of competitive swimming through improvement of their stroke and racing techniques, improved personal race times, appreciation of the team friendships and team spirit.

Practices
Sudbury Swim Team offers 3 practices a week on MONDAYS, WEDNESDAYS, and THURSDAYS at the Atkinson Pool in Sudbury. Swimmers are asked to make the commitment to attend at least 2 practices a week. The practices are divided by swimming ability first, and then efforts are made to have age appropriate peers. Swimmers are assigned to a practice time and a lane based on their age and ability. The initial assignment of a practice schedule is done at the annual meeting. This may change during the course of the season as swimmers improve. Please do not ask the coaches to switch your child from one practice to another. What practice your child attends is a coaching decision and is based on the assessment of the child's emotional and physical development as a swimmer. This is done to help provide structure to the practices. There is no guarantee that siblings will swim in the same practice. Each practice consists of a defined warm-up period, a defined stroke drill time period where technique is worked on, a cardiovascular/endurance main set which helps the kids improve their swimming fitness, and a warm-down period where starts and turns are emphasized. Practices will run from November through the second week of March at Atkinson Pool. Please make every effort to have your child on deck ready to swim 5-10 minutes before their practice begins. Late swimmers will miss important warm-up and stroke drill time. Please note that it is the team's general policy that parents refrain from coming out to the pool deck during practices.

Swim-A-Thon

This year the swimathon and ice cream social date is Friday, February 12th (6-8pm)

The team sponsors Swim-a-Thon and fundraising drive held annually to raise money for the Swim Team Scholarship.  This substantial scholarship, established in 2000, is awarded to a Lincoln-Sudbury Senior who through his or her participation in the sport of competitive swimming has realized the rewards of commitment, passion, and dedication in mind, body and spirit.  Recipients of this award will exhibit outstanding scholarship, swimming excellence and community leadership.  Past recipients have included Alex Lawton, Alanna Sieck, Jason and Eric Thumma, Chris Baum, Jeff Wurm, Martha Shoemaker, Scott Erhmann, and Matt Newton.

Behavior
All Swimmers are expected to display respect for other swimmers, adults and property at all times.  The team has a zero tolerance policy for any behavior that puts people, property or the team at risk.  Behavior that, in the opinion of the coaches and the board, is inappropriate will be grounds for dismissal from the team.  If a conflict results between swimmers, both swimmers and parents are asked to bring it to the attention of the coaches or the board immediately.  Swimmers and parents are asked to sign a Code of Conduct form at the start of the season.

Swimmer Awards:
To honor and celebrate the commitment that the swimmers make to themselves and to the team, The Sudbury Swim Team gives three annual awards out to swimmers at the Annual Swim Team Banquet in March.

Most Improved Swimmer Award:
This award is given to our swimmers who have shown dramatic improvement in their swimming over the course of the season.

The 9th Lane Award:
This award like the 10th player award given in baseball, is given to our swimmers who consistently make an outstanding effort at practices and meets, exhibits admirable sportsmanship and attitude, and is willing to swim without complaint where they are needed.

The Robert K. Lawton Award:
This award is given in honor of Bob Lawton, the founder of the team.  This award is given to our swimmers who demonstrate excellence in attitude, leadership, effort and swimming performance.

Swim Meets
The team swims in the Winter Suburban Swim League, which is a fairly competitive league, composed of 14 teams from the greater Boston area. The teams are divided into two divisions based upon size and ability of the team. We are part of Division 1 but we will swim teams from both divisions. The league requires that the swimmer compete in at least 6 of the 9 dual meets in order to compete in the championship meet. The Sudbury Swim team expectation is the same. The swimmer must notify the coach by the Monday preceding the meet if they will not be at the upcoming weekend meet, otherwise it will be assumed that the swimmer will be there. Failure to notify the coach of a meet absence will result in lack of permission to swim in the following swim meet. Failure to stay for the entire meet will also result in removal from the following meet. It takes an enormous amount of time and strategizing to plan a swim meet and one unexpected absence can throw the whole lineup off. There is no flexibility around this requirement. The swim meets have 52 events and last approximately 3.0 hours. This varies, though, depending upon the number of swimmers each team has on a given day. The team expectation is that the swimmers will stay for the entire meet. The relays happen at the end of the meet and if a swimmer leaves early, 3 other swimmers are left disappointed and unable to swim.
